Can we be age tolerant?

The autumn meeting of the Plus55 Club has hosted inspiring guests.

We who took on the topic "Can we be age tolerant towards each other at work?"

The questions were simple:
▶ Can HR work to create conditions for multigenerational teams?
▶ How can HR contribute to mutual respect between generations?

And this is how the members of the Plus55 Club and our expert guests saw it. Mr. Pavol Lančarič shared with us his/our success story, when he starts his new work thanks to the portal www.plus55.net. Mr. Ľuboš Lopatka introduced us to the art of uniting teams across generations. Our HR experts Mr. Peter Štefanko, Ms. Jana Palenčárová, Ms. Inge Murgašová and Mr. Dušan Antoš shared with us their experiences and moderated discussions at the round tables.

Here are some of the discussed ideas:
▶ Involve in the selection process tandems of a Recruiter and a Hiring Manager
▶ Support the system of HR Business Partners, who will "live" in intensive contact with the assigned departments
▶ Support age diversity within teams - team members learn to respect different approaches and ways of working
▶ Work with prejudices against different generations, teach colleagues to listen to each other
▶ One of the main tasks of the HR Department is to promote respect and mutual listening - not to be a "policeman" to be a "sunshine"
▶ Foster strong leaders with an open mind - it's not just HR's job, leaders/managers should play an active role in supporting multi-generational collaboration
▶ Consider a system of internal "interim experts" who will be "deployed" on projects within the company
▶ De-emphasize maximum performance and potential a bit. Not seeing only "stars" in teams, also appreciating the contribution of "standard performers"
▶ Take into account other needs of different generations when setting up the benefits system (e.g. access to a fitness center - versus extra vacation to care for parents in old age)
